2015: One Word Resolution

Happy 2015, dear readers! We're back to blogging this week, and frankly, I'm already behind on everything. Still, the start of a new year holds its potential and promises.

I took some extra time these past few weeks to decide what my word for 2015 would be, and I've finally landed on it

But first, an explanation about the One Word Resolution to anyone new to the idea or anyone who needs a refresher. Instead of making individual New Year's Resolutions (though you certainly still can make them!), you choose a guiding word for the year. It's to help you achieve your goals, focus your attitude, remind you of what you want out of the year.

I learned about the concept from blog friends, who read about it first at Jessica Cora's blog. I've linked her name to the post where she explains the concept. Another blogger who employs this method is Susannah Conway, who runs a free e-workshop to help you find your word (I used this for the first time this year).

So without further ado, my word for 2015 is...

CHANGE

In the past, my words have been present and focus, both things I still really need going into 2015 (especially focus - I kind of failed on that front in 2014), but I wanted something more active and encompassing of what I want at this juncture in my life.

2014 was not a bad year at all for me (though I know it was tough for some & it was tough in the world at large). After all, I did so much traveling - more than I usually do within a given year - did so many fun geeky things, finally met some of my favorite online friends, and made some new friends to boot! While I maybe didn't focus enough on some of my more task-based goals, I felt like I embraced more and expanded more socially than I'm usually comfortable with. I've long been comfortable with my geekiness, but I felt like this year, I let myself be more loud and proud about it.

Highlights of 2014:

  • Sherlock S3 - not like we'd been waiting 2 years for this or anything. Viewed this with besties.

  • London-Paris Trip: First international trip with just the Sister! Got to meet up & stay with (in Paris) my college roomie! Triple Bucket List successes:
    • seeing Shakespeare performed in London
    • Tom Hiddleston in the flesh
    • Harry Potter Studio Tour + Platform 9 3/4!

  • Collaborated with April Tucholke & Lydia Kang on a Twitter Fiction Fest entry that eventually became my WIP verse novel.
  • Rediscovered my love for poetry & started writing it again.
  • Read my first books in verse and started reading my first on-going comic book (ODY-C).
  • Participated in my first podcast with the super nice Crazy4ComicCon, whose tips really helped me navigate my first SDCC in 2013 successfully.
  • The World Cup: yeah, soccer is pretty fun after all. Team USA! (And barring that, Germany)
  • SDCC 2014: other than the regular fun- I zip-lined for the first time ever and casual cosplayed. Became new/better friends with Jenn and Diana- girls after my own heart. Bucket List successes:
    • signing with Hannibal cast/crew (showrunner Bryan Fuller is super nice!)
    • met literary hero Peter S. Beagle
    • finally met long-time online friend & talented YA author Lydia Kang
  • Listened to my first podcats: Sarah Enni's insightful & inspiring First Draft Podcast; totally addictive true crime phenomenon Serial.
  • Met up with online writerly cohorts (some for the first time): Sarah Enni, Yahong Chi, wistfullyLinda, Lydia Kang.
  • Traveled to Italy! Bucket list successes:
    • Gelato- everywhere
    • Pompeii
    • Ancient ruins, everywhere
    • saw The Last Supper IRL with my OWN EYES
    • hot David(s)/ Bernini's and Michelangelo's

  • Joined in Fandom 5 Fridays hosted by The Nerdy Girlie & Superspacechick, which led to even more geek girl connections (like the hostesses themselves).
  • Re: above, also finally joined up in the Nerdy Girlie's Female Geek Bloggers G+ group!
  • Participated in photo challenges & did pretty great in them: Jaime Morrow's YA Photo A Day and Set To Stunning's Nerdvember!
  • Upped my geek chic game. All leggings, all the time. Special thanks to the Sis and co-blogger Alz for my epic Alexander Hamilton bling.
  • Fun Saturday marathon of I heart Nick Carter with the girls. BSB will never not be funny!
  • Music: fell in love with Hozier's music/voice in May at his show; jammed out to Guardian of the Galaxy's Awesome Mix Vol. 1; Jason Mraz still makes me swoon at concerts; rediscovered love for Bastille in Italy and saw them in November; obsessed over Taylor Swift's 1989 - and yeah, okay I think I'm a fan.
  • TV: Hannibal somehow upped the stakes and kicked even more ass in their 2nd season; geek TV- the year I started watched way too many shows & got addicted to Arrow.
  • 10 Year High School reunion!
  • Epic Fellowship-large group movie outing to see the last HOBBIT movie.
  • STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS teaser trailer!!!

That said, while the past year was a whirlwind, I also had a growing sense of stuck-ness. Despite all the fun I was having and even some of the growth, I wasn't content and I felt stagnant - like I wasn't really achieving the things I wanted to achieve. This isn't to downplay whatever learning experiences I had in 2014 because I'm grateful for them, but I want 2015 to be the year I'm more active about moving forward, about changing the things that are bothering me.

Some of the tougher parts of 2014 showed me that I need to take more control of my life and ambitions. I had some interpersonal drama that was resolved in most senses but left me feeling kind of disappointed and unsatisfied. Other aspects of my personal life were more stressful and hectic as well, and through this, I was made to realize how long I've been doing what I'm doing. Having my 10 year high school reunion only emphasized this (though I had a good time at the event). I've also realized how often I let fear and doubt dictate my decisions or stop me from trying things.

So I think it's time for a change, and my wish for 2015 is for it to be a year of transformation in various aspects of my life. I know I will have to put in more time, dedication, bravery, and yes, focus to make it happen, but I don't want to reach the end of 2015 with the same sense that I ended 2014 with - happy but unsatisfied.

Anyway, I made a Pinterest board to keep me inspired and on-track throughout the year. I was inspired to follow in fellow geek girl Mia's (who I met through the Nerdvember challenge & SDCC badge-pre-sale buying frenzy) footsteps. Her word for the year, by the way, is sparkle.

Final note: I'd like to add that in 2015, I'd like more sparkle, more whimsy, more delight, and more courage. So what's your word for the year?

P.S. Other One Word Resolutions to inspire you.

2014: One Word Resolution

Hello dear readers and friends! Bit of a late start this year with the blogging, but I was making good over the holidays on my 2013 One Word Resolution: Present by being around for my friends and family and just soaking in the good vibes at the end of the year.

That said, it is now 2014! Happy New Year!

This also means it's time to pick a new word for 2014.

For those of you new to this concept, it's basically a New Year's Resolution compacted down into 1 word. That word is your guide, your attitude, your touchstone for the year, and from there, you can make more specific goals. I heard about this from blog friends, who had read about the One Word Resolution from Jessica Cora. I've linked her name to the post where she explains the concept.

So, my word for 2014 is...

FOCUS

I knew going into 2013 that things were going to be hectic on the personal side of life. I had two weddings for two of my oldest friends (I was a bridesmaid in one), and the Sister and I were planning on going to San Diego Comic-Con (which worked out after a lot of stress and angst). Those things pretty much guaranteed the first part of 2013 would speed by, so I chose PRESENT as my word. I wanted to enjoy all these amazing events, as well as anything else 2013 threw my way, and my word served me well. I had a fantastic year I think in large part due to this attitude.

For 2014, I'd like to be a bit more active with my energies. 2013 was about going with the flow (so as not to be overwhelmed), but I want 2014 to be about making things happen. For someone who is a chronic procrastinator and self-proclaimed lazy-face, I know it's easy for me to get distracted and discouraged. I want to have the focus to make better on my goals this year and to have focus be the reason for not getting overwhelmed.

Of course, I will be keeping my 2013 word near because being present is always helpful for balance. And I will also be keeping a few more things in mind.

The sister had this necklace custom-made for me for Christmas. She asked me to write her a word or phrase that inspired me or that I lived by or was my motto. I'm not one of those people who has these types of things in mind, so I had to think about it. The above is what I came up with because I was thinking about being present and living fully and bravely - things that I constantly struggle with (especially since I'm lazy and introverted and kind of shy- yes, really), and I thought if you're going to do something, you might as well do it spectacularly.

(Although, let's be real, I was tempted to use my favorite word/sometimes life-motto schneizeleffort.)

In relation to the necklace and to living bravely, I'm also reminded of this quote that I posted as part of a What's Up Wednesday post that I also find incredibly inspiring.

Ah, this was kind of a heavy post for the first one of 2014, but an important one I think. New year, new opportunities, new chances! What's your word for the year?

P.S. I found these One Word Resolutions inspiring too.

Give Yourself a Break

I took a mini blog-cation around the end of March in a last ditch effort to finish up some writing. I didn't actually get that much writing done, but the break was nice. It was a good reminder of something I lose track of all the time:

Breaks are good for you!

In our busy, busy world with our busy, busy lives, it's easy to forget to give yourself a moment. We're constantly running on deadlines, goals, and expectations. Have to get to work on time, must finish that paper, remember to pick the kids up. There's almost always something we feel we have to be doing or should be doing, and let's face it, there's just NOT ENOUGH TIME in the day.

And that's why breaks are important. If you're running all the time, you're going to run yourself into the ground. You'll lose sight of the point, of what's important. You'll probably even forget to enjoy doing the things you like to do.

Breaks let you rest and reflect. How else are you going to get perspective if you don't step away for a bit?

These recent breaks I took reminded me why breaks are awesome.

  •  Rock Band break: I bought Rock Band 2 a few months ago, but house-remodeling and cleaning made it impossible to play at home. Also, we didn't much feel like it. A few weeks ago, we played and it was super, super fun. The long break, plus the new game (which allowed band customizations), renewed our love for the game. Oh and our band, Mit Hutten, is awesomesauce (at least on the medium level).
  • Writing break: After my failed attempt to make my April resolution writing deadline, I took a break from it. Plus, there were Real Life distractions as well. As with many long breaks, it was hard to get back on board with writing. However, when I finally started working on my WIP again, it felt great and I started to feel really excited about it again.
  • Reading break: I've been reading a lot of YA fantasy/paranormal romance, and I've enjoyed it. Still, after a while, you lose the sense of excitement and newness since you come to expect that certain things will happen. Gayle Forman's If I Stay was a breather. Yeah, it's got a bit of the paranormal (in premise), and okay, there's some romance too, but it was more of a contemporary, literary YA read. It was a different kind of story, not to mention beautifully written. I loved it, and it also made me eager to get back to the other books - mostly YA fantasy and/or paranormal - I had lined up. Included among these books was the rest of the Gemma Doyle trilogy. I had been eager to read them, but with all the fantasy-ish stuff I'd been reading, plus the huge book sizes, I felt a little burned out and daunted. After my break, I was ready to go, and I have since finished the trilogy.
So next time you feel totally stressed out or pooped out, stop. Breathe and cut yourself some slack! One of the best things I learned in my Meditation class is that sometimes, you have to just banish everything else and BE in the moment. Trust me, you'll feel refreshed afterward.

Have you taken any breaks lately? What did you do or NOT do? How did you feel about it?

    W(H)IP It Together

I was going to post up some book logs, but I realized that it's the last full week of March. Things are getting crazy at work, where I'm subsisting off green tea, fortune cookies, and Red Vines; I'm not getting enough sleep (I guess full-time work really is more grueling than being a full-time student, when I often got less sleep but didn't feel nearly as tired); and did I mention it's almost the end of March?

One of my resolutions was to finish 2 of the 3 short stories I have sitting around by April, but I instead started a new one. With roughly 7 days left of March, I'm putting my nose to the grindstone (is that a phrase?) and I will attempt to finish AT LEAST one of those. Gotta make adjustments for Real Life, right?

When I return, I will have brief book logs. I just finished Frank Beddor's ArchEnemy of the Looking Glass Wars trilogy and Gail Carriger's Soulless. I'm currently reading Gayle Forman's If I Stay.

So no real blog posts for the next 7 days because I will be whipping up a WIP. Wish me luck.

P.S. I kinda want to try out these Vision Boards or vision journals, but I suck at keeping journals. I'm also intensely adverse to cutting photographic things up like how I can't mark-up books, not even text books for school. It pains me.

"Witty Alliterative Title Here" Writing Update

So I said last Friday that I was doing the whole Write Your @ss Off Day thing. Well, I sort of did it (I'll explain), and here's how it went.

On Friday, I had work and was so excited for the weekend that I didn't do anything of consequence to writing. Anyway, my Day of Writing was technically Sunday.

On Saturday, I had a dentist appointment in the morning. I was supposed to go to a Glee watching marathon in the afternoon, but I wasn't feeling well. I took a nap instead. Then there was dinner with family friends. At night, I opened my doc and tinkered around a bit, realizing that Oh, Scene 2 really should NOT have been changed to Scene 1. I'll switch it back, but uh, okay, is this bit of information going to be mentioned in the re-established Scene 1 or should I leave it in here? Great, I've thrown my entire opening time line off. THAT'S FANTASTIC. I freaked out a little. Bright side? The enigmatic Midnight Sun revealed something about himself that is quite cool. Other than that though, I have the feeling he'll be a complete pain to work with once I get to him. I'm preparing myself.

On Sunday, I got up early (for me), went to lunch with Luce and the sister, and then wrote got talked into going shopping (for just a short time) by the two of them because we had discount coupons! Of course, we failed the read the fine print that said the discount was only valid on REGULAR PRICE ITEMS. Shopping!fail guys, except not because I bought a dress on a sale.

AHEM. Got home well before the start of the Super Bowl, and while the sister and Dad watched, I opened my doc and tinkered some more. You may notice I'm good at tinkering, not so good at actual writing. IT'S OKAY THOUGH because the rules were to just work on it. I researched some clothing and architecture and even some agriculture. Somehow I ended up on Etsy, where -not gonna lie- I wasted some time. Blah blah blah. After dinner, instead of having a Supernatural party with Luce, we got together with Alz and had a crafts/writing party.

So all in all, it was a productive weekend for me. I probably should've NANO-styled my writing (no Inner Editor), but Real Life sometimes gets in the way of writing (and delicious homemade cheese bread, which I missed out on since I didn't make the Glee party).

Random aside of the post: It is COLD, guys. I know I'm doing the whiny Californian thing again, but I can't help it! The coldness of my toes (I'm wearing socks, and I don't like wearing socks) and hands is taking up like 40% of my already limited attention span. Granted, my hands tend to just be on the cold side; some people think I'm a vampire. (No, I don't sparkle, and if I did, I'd join the circus to take advantage of my freakish physical feature. Wait, this sounds like a story... Alz? One of yours?)

I was going to watch Supernatural with Luce, but it's too cold for either of us to want to venture outside our houses. I'm the one with the episodes, but I've seen them (Luce is on Season 3); Luce hasn't seen them, but she can't watch them alone because they are scary, no lie.

    End ramble.

    How was your weekend? Fun?

See you peeps Friday for a special Friday Randomosity Work-In-Progress Edition Meme!

P.S. Coincidentally, Moonrat at Editorial Ass linked to a post about the racebending of The Last Airbender and the whitewashing of book covers that I found quite worth the read. Please take a look if you are so inclined.

    Weekly Breakdown

There was a post I read last week by the lovely Elana Johnson about how she spends the hours in her week. It's pretty intense. Anyway, I thought it'd be interesting to break things down her way and see where all my time is going. (Unfortunately, I think I already know. That time black hole is something that starts with "Inter" and ends with "net.") So here goes!

    7 days a week x 24 hours in a day = 168 hours/week.

    Sleep
    Weekdays: 6.5 hours x 5 days = 32.5 hours
    Weekends: 9 hours x 2 days = 18 hours

    Hours remaining: 117.5 hours

I'm trying to increase my weekday sleep to 7 hours a night, but I'm really just not a morning person! It's easier for me to stay up late. Argh. I make up for it on the weekends (sort of), but *bad news alert!* sleep cycles don't work like that. You can't accrue them over the weekend or make up for what you've lost. Sad times.

    Work
    Work day: 8 hours x 5 days = 40 hours
    Commute: 1.25 hours x 5 days = 6.25 hours

    Hours remaining: 71.25 hours

This is when I start appreciating my college schedule. This is when I also start missing those 7 min drives to and from the high school.

Socializing (ridiculousness with friends / make-shift book club)
    Weekdays: 2 hours x 3 days = 6 hours
Weekends: varies (so I'm not calculating it in because it'd be too hard to say)

    Hours remaining: 65.25 hours

Over the past few months somehow, a few of my friends and I have fallen into a weekly habit of imbibing delicious boba drinks and chatting after work/school.

Internet (Blogs, Twitter, Facebook, stupid online games, AIM etc.)
    3(+) hours x 7 days = 21 hours

    Time remaining: 44.25 hours

On the weekends, it's either a lot less or a bit more than what I have here. Also, the time greatly varies depending on whether or not I'm playing Bejeweled Blitz on Facebook. -_-' I have a horrible addiction to mindless/simple/stupid online games - a habit formed in college.

    TV
4-6 hours (give or take, depending on the season; I'll round to 5 hrs/wk)

    Hours remaining: 39.25 hours

Hard to break down by days, since I watch a lot of my shows online. It's easier schedule-wise and also no commercials!

    Family Dinner
    Weekdays: 1.5 hours x 5 days = 7.5 hours
    Weekends: varies

    Hours remaining: 31.75 hours

I eat with and generally spend time with my grandma every weekday night, almost without fail, making this worthy of being calculated into my week.

So I have a little over a day leftover. Um, wow. I guess I should wean myself from the internet and possibly cut some TV shows. I already cut so many TV shows though, and I even multi-task while watching TV shows by also being online and often eating my meals! Truth be told, a lot of my TV and internet time overlap, and my socializing time tends to be always in flux. Maybe I should stock-pile blog posts the way I stock-pile Christmas presents months in advance. Also, reading faster would probably help, but I'm a slow reader. Sadness.

As for where "writing" falls, it's wherever I can snatch time to do it. I'm still struggling to establish a routine for it, which I think would be best in the long run. There would certainly be less scrambling and scrounging.

Never enough time in the day, is there? What are your time management tricks? Where do your hours go?

    More 2010 Resolutions

All right, all right, Krispy, I wasn't going to make resolutions since I usually fail at keeping them and this depresses me, but since you've done it, so too now shall I! Maybe this will be proper incentive to actually actively pursue their keeping.

    1) Like Krispy, I'd like to establish more regular writing habits. This is not to say that I don't write a lot already--but I could be writing more, and I could be doing it on a more consistent basis. And I could also probably due with focusing on only one a couple a few projects at a time.

    2) Finish Nanowrimo 2006 story, which incidentally is also probably going to be my thesis work for grad school. Quite important, yep. Really should get that sucker done (and completely revised).

    3) Blog more!

    4) Read more!

    5) Get published!

    6) I'd love to finish Nano 2007/2008, although since it turned into a gigantic overly complicated monster sprawling for page upon haphazard page with no end in sight, it would necessitate a massive rehaul. Which I probably shouldn't do until I've fulfilled resolution #2.

    7) I'd also like to get around to that total revision and renewal of the Syldraverse story--which, unlike #6, I may be able to start despite #2 because it'd be a clean restart. Except that I might get carried away with it, so maybe not. But we shall see. Everyone needs an outlet. Actually, that would be 3 projects, wouldn't it? Nano '06, Nano '07/'08, and Syldraverse Remix. Hmm...will have to think about that...I think the '07/'08 is too much to handle in conjunction with other major projects, so we'll nix that and move on to the next...

Of course, this is to say nothing of--

    8) Our Baby! Our co-novel for which we started this blog in the first place! Our original endeavor! I say that this is NOT an iffy resolution, Krispy, but a firm and decisive one, concrete of will--nay, iron of will! Titanium! Adamantium! We've had a nice long break from it, which is probably a good thing; now we can go back and look at what we did, decide what works and what doesn't, rehash, revise, replot, replan, and finish our outline, and then get around to actually writing it!

Ah, yes. I think that will do nicely. I'm excited because it's been so long since we discussed our neglected baby and did any plotting or concentrated development--but hopefully now that our schedules have been sorted out, we'll be able to resume our sojourn towards collaborative awesomeness.

Here's to 2010 and the keeping of resolutions! *toast*

Christmas Gifts & Resolutions for 2010

It's back to the grind tomorrow, so I thought I'd start the first work week of the new year by taking care of 2 things here on the blog. First up, let's wrap up something from December - presents!

We received a very sweet blog award from one Icy Roses (THANK YOU!!!):

    • Each Superior Scribbler must in turn pass The Award on to 5 most-deserving Bloggy Friends.
    • Each Superior Scribbler must link to the author & the name of the blog from whom he/she has received The Award.
    • Each Superior Scribbler must display The Award on his/her blog, and link to This Post, which explains The Award.
    • Each Blogger who wins The Superior Scribbler Award must visit this post and add his/her name to the Mr. Linky List. That way, we'll be able to keep up-to-date on everyone who receives This Prestigious Honor!
    • Each Superior Scribbler must post these rules on his/her blog.
Great Christmas present, not to mention great motivation to keep up with the blogging. As for paying this thing forward, many of the people I have in mind actually already have this award (and deservingly so!). So, I shall hold on to this for a while and nominate when I've been around the blogosphere a little longer. :)

Secondly, time for some New Year's Resolutions. These will be writing-related since the non-writing related ones mostly focus on the goal of Figuring Out My Life. Too much to handle for A Nudge, I think (and I've already written them up elsewhere). So onwards with writing resolutions!

    1. Establish more consistent writing habits. For now, I'll start with at least 4 times a week for 15 minutes each. That makes an hour. (Look, math! Look, I'm also factoring in my procrastination and Real Life!)

    2. Finish at least 2 of the 3 Solaris stories that are littering my Google Docs by April. Seriously. For once I actually know what happens!

    3. Work on the 2009 NaNo story (instead of letting it sit like poor 2008 NaNo Cinders and Glass...).

    4. Start writing my random ideas down somewhere, so I don't forget CRUCIAL pieces of info. (My elephant memory isn't what it used to be sadly.)

    5. Blog more! At least once a week every week. (Starting small!)

    6. Read more!

And an iffy-er resolution, but something I'd like to work on:

    7. Um, work on Novel after which this blog is named???! (Hmm, Alz?)

So I've got my work cut out for me, but 2010's the start of a new decade. About time I got on top of this. What are your goals for this year and beyond?

    11.18.2009

    Middling the Week

'Sup peeps. So I obviously calmed myself down and took a step back from blogging every time I looked at the calendar, looked at my word count, and started freaking out. I think bi-weekly is a good pace for this blog, especially considering we're going from once a month to twice a week in November. Trust me though, I've been holding back.

It is now Wednesday, November 18, more than halfway through the month. To tell you the truth, I thought things would calm the eff down by now, mostly because the many birthdays are over (omg, I just remembered one more right now...must text her...). As usual, I was wrong. I think this will be one of my NaNo lessons for this year:

TIME IS NOT ON YOUR SIDE.

On the other hand, it's been a happenin' November, full of pleasant surprises. Yesterday, for example, I squeezed in a mere 100 words or so, but it was totally okay because I had tickets to a free secret concert. My sister apparently has amazing Twitter and email skillz0rs and scored tickets to OK Go's secret show last night in LA. It was at the Grammy Museum at LA Live, and it was being filmed for Last Call with Carson Daly. Sadly this meant no pictures, but the show was AWESOME. Small crowd, small room, and pretty much a full concert set (and FREE). They said it'd only be 45 min, but it felt longer. New songs, old songs, random hilarity. Oh man, I had no idea they were so good live. The one downside was parking at LA Live.

Um, I had no idea parking there was $25. Yes. $25. Seriously had a ridic moment with the parking attendant when she said, "It'll be 25," and I stared at her and said, "Dollars???"

What does this have to do with writing? Nothing, to be honest, except that NaNo is all well and good, but so is your social life sometimes. Yes, it's November. Yes, this is possibly the only month in the year you set aside exclusively for mad writing with the excuse that thousands and thousands of people are dedicating themselves to the same crazy dream. But, sometimes life also hands you a pair of free concert tickets, and you really just need to take them. Really.

Now, time to distract the Inner Editor and get back to NaNo-ing.

(But I'm still really boggled by parking costing 25-freaking-dollars.)

(P.S. In case you missed it, Alz has been done with NaNo word count-wise for like a week now. That boggles my mind as well and I should be used to this!)
