RSW 2015: Week 3

Ready.Set.Write! is a summer writing intensive hosted by Alison Miller, Katy Upperman, Erin Funk, Elodie Nowodazkij, and Jaime Morrow. Click the banner or the link previous for more information on the intensive.

We're checking in every Monday, and the link-up will be on the host blogs. This is the first week of updates!

1. How I did on last week’s goals

  • Write for 15 min every day. I didn't manage the 15 minutes every day, but I got 3 out of 7! Didn't do better this week in terms of getting daily writing into a habit, but I did write more on one of those days to try to make up for it.
  • Finish a beta read and send notes. Nearly finished the read. Still need to send notes.
  • Start next beta read. Not yet.
  • Get more sleep. Unfortunately, no. Busy, busy week. I did, however, go get a foot massage, so yay for that!

2. My goal(s) for this week

As with last week, I'm adding in a few non-writing goals.
  • Write for 15 min every day
  • Start next beta read
  • Go to the gym/exercise at least 2 times a week.
  • Get more sleep

3. A favorite line from my story OR one word/phrase that sums up what I wrote/revised

Frustrating - the writing has been tough going this week, and I kind of hate the words I managed, but I think I've just got to go through it.

4. The biggest challenge I faced this week (ex. finding time to write)

I think finding energy and time to write will be a theme of this section - at least for the next few weeks. Comic Con is on the horizon, which is always busy-making, and there's a lot of moving and shaking happening at work, which adds to this stress.

5. Something I love about my WiP

Since my WIP is a semi-retelling of Cinderella, it's always fun for me to play with the elements of the fairytale - what to twist, what to keep, what to dump.

How did you do with your goals this week?

I've never attempted a fairy tale retelling before, but I'd really like to. Sounds fun! Hope the stress level isn't too high this week for you, that's never good. And here's to more sleep! =)

So, ANY writing accomplished during the week is a huge plus so good for you! Also, "just go through it" is my first draft mantra. I write a lot of crappy words on first draft and I just look at this way: I can always CHANGE THEM. :)

PS - I read EXTRAORDINARY MEANS this past week and the main character had a black lab named LOKI and I totally thought of you. He's only mentioned once, but the book's pretty awesome regardless. :)

Also, I'm always so jealous of your Comic Con adventures! Can't wait to see pictures!

Three days is still great! As to hating the words you wrote... I've found that sometimes the words you hated writing the most end up being ones you prefer when it comes to rereading, and having any words at all is always good. ;) Plus, fairytale retellings! They're always awesome. :)

Good luck with this week, I hope you get the sleep you want this time! :)

Sorry the story's been fighting you for words this week! That happened to me with my last WIP, and I just kept at it every day, and ended up with 103k--well over my goal and with time to spare to meet my deadline :). You can do this!

Love Cinderella retellings! And I feel like sometimes beta reading, while necessary and fun and everything, can definitely overtake your own writing time. It's a hard thing to balance, at least for me. Hope you can get more sleep and less stress this week! :)

Great job sitting down and writing three days this past week. That's good, Alice! :-) Life is super distracting and energy-sucking, so it's great that you managed some writing even despite that. I can so relate to "frustrating" and hating everything I'm putting down on the page. The nice thing is, soon you'll probably be back in the "I love this" stage. That always seems to be how it goes, don't you think? Such a roller coaster. Have a wonderful week, and good luck with your goals!

As a huge fan of Once Upon a Time, I love a good retelling of fairytales.
Best of luck to you in your goals this week and get your sleep. Everything seems easier with some sleep!

It's great you can work in reading other writers' manuscripts. Good to know your limits, too :)

Ugh, energy...we definitely know where you're coming. Between working on our doctoral degrees, actual WORK, and trying to write/read/spend time with family--our energy is dwindling. But you DID get something done this week so that's to be celebrated. We're throwing confetti for you!

I've never tried a fairytale retelling, but it sounds like it would be a lot of fun. Good luck finding time to write this week!
