What's Up Wednesday (17)

What's Up Wednesday is a weekly meme geared toward readers and writers, so we can check in with each other. To join, just check out Jaime Morrow or Erin Funk's blogs for the link widget and sign up!

WHAT I'M READING

ALL OUR YESTERDAYS by Cristin Terrill! Too many books came out in late August/September that I'm still trying to catch up with the reading! Sadly, I'm now even more behind on my reading goal. On the bright side, I did read a friend's manuscript before this and I hope it one day becomes a book because I love the world and idea!

WHAT I'M WRITING

Nothing at the moment, but I am planning a bit for NaNoWriMo. Speaking of that, yes, I'm doing it!

If you are too, be my buddy! I'm kangaru (just like my twitter handle). Alz always participates, and you can find her as shizalent.

I've also been writing #hallowfic on Twitter. It's a fun, seasonally appropriate micro-fiction challenge started by S.E. Sinkhorn. There have been lots of great ones. Details here: Write #hallowfic, win a book.

Here are my #hallowfic attempts (including one that doubles as a #twtpoem):

WHAT INSPIRES ME RIGHT NOW

All the excitement people have for NaNoWriMo! I love seeing everyone's excitement, and I'm enjoying the thinky thoughts talks I'm having with a few of my writer friends. November 1st is so close. I'M NOT READY.

WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO

Other than catching a cold (hence my lack of blogging these past weeks - thanks for covering, Alz!), there's been quite a few things that have happened.

1) We increased our Loki army (not to be mistaken for Loki's army).

2) And crowned our Loki.

Photo/ the Sister

3) We fangirled (again) over how much we love Pacific Rim, and then we went on a quest for jaegers.

Mission accomplished!     [Photo/ the Sister]

4) The Sister is a BAMF and was the 1st LA person to #stealthisbook from The Book Thief movie people as part of Markus Zusak's twitter contest.

So we got to see an advanced screening of THE BOOK THIEF! Spoiler: it was lovely! It made me cry a few tears (and I'm not a movie or book crier). John Williams, your scores are always toying with my emotions!!

Confession: I still haven't finished the book, but ultimately, I think the book will be better just because of the nature of the story (words are life and goodness, is the writing gorgeous in the book) and because of the format of the story. BUT I think the movie is a fitting companion. Maybe I'll talk about this more once I've finished reading and when the movie is out.

5) We carved pumpkins with friends!

The Sister made a dalek (her second carving ever!) and I used Kate Hart's wonderful stencil from last year to carve THE RAVEN BOYS cover!

Night-time shots:

6) The Sister and I are putting the final touches on our Halloween costumes!

7) The Sister is more hip to the Buzzfeed thing than I am, but we both made posts this past week that were pretty popular. Thanks for all the love, and if you haven't seen these yet, please check them out (and share)!

And my 18 Literary Pumpkins For A Bookish Halloween

Q4U: What's up with you? and What are you going to be for Halloween?

And be sure to check back Friday for a true TALE OF QUAIL MURDER!

Ohmygosh - so many awesome things! First, I LOVED seeing your pumpkin parade the other day and seeing it again still makes me smile - so cool! Also, I LOVE that your pumpkin was RAVEN BOYS themed. Fun! And so jealous of your sister. I STILL need to read THE BOOK THIEF and I think/possibly/maybe...okay, I'm reading it next. I've been procrastinating it too long. I've been catching up on a lot of September reads too - loved ALL OUR YESTERDAYS!!!

And yay for NaNo! I'm not doing it this year (again), but I'll cheer you on from the sidelines! I hope you get LOTS of writing done. :) Also, LOVE the twitter name.

Have a great week!

I enjoyed both of those Buzzfeed articles but didn't realize the literary pumpkins one was you! So cool.

The Book Thief is one of my favorite books (the gorgeous writing, the heartbreaking characters!) and I had no idea it was going to be a movie!!! So looking forward to that! Have you read Zusak's I Am the Messenger? Read it! So good.

I'm finishing my prep for NaNo, too. Can't believe Nov. 1 is two days away!

Happy reading and writing! from Laura Marcella @ Wavy Lines

Great pumpkins! And I'm so jealous that you got to see The Book Thief already. There are so many movies coming out in November that I don't know if I'll get to see them all. Plus, NaNo. I'm not ready either.

Love your pumpkin parade -- you guys did a fabulous job with your carvings! I am so envious that you got to see an advanced screening of THE BOOK THIEF. I adore that novel, and I can't wait to see the movie. Best of luck with NaNo, lady!

I LOVED All Our Yesterdays. And I'm glad to hear you liked The Book Thief movie - I've been nervous about it, since I loved the book so much and I'm not sure there's any way to do it justice. I've been going back and forth on seeing it, but at the moment I'm leaning toward seeing it.

Good luck with NaNo!

Hi, I'm new to What's Up Wednesday--nice to meet you. :)

Those are some excellent pumpkins! And I'm not doing NaNo, but I'm going to try to ride the wave of everyone's energy to get some good drafting done this month. Specific goals will probably be set tomorrow at midnight...

I can't wait to see The Book Thief. I haven't read the book yet either. I did buy it last week. I would like to read it before next week when the movie comes out. I'm finishing up my NaNoWriMo prep. I added you as a buddy. I'm listed as amybrashear. Good luck with NaNo!!! Have a great weekend!

I've added you as a buddie for NaNo, I'm on there as Jossie Marie Solheim. Your pumpkins are brilliant. My son and I are going to attack ours today. Still have no idea what to do with them. It is our first time ever carving pumpkins lol.I like the idea of following a literature theme though. Although I am sure Kye would love to do a doctor who one too. I'll be searching for some idea's shortly.
Hope you are fully recovered from your cold now. I hate colds. Have a great week xx
