What's Up Wednesday (61)

What's Up Wednesday is a weekly meme geared toward readers and writers, so we can check in with each other. To join, just check out Jaime Morrow or Erin Funk's blogs for the link widget and sign up!

EDIT: Apparently, this is the last What's Up Wednesday that will be hosted by Jaime and Erin! It's been a great run, ladies. Thank you for hosting!!

WHAT I'M READING

Same as last week. Also, here's a pic of my currently reading/TBR.

WHAT I'M WRITING

I actually finished up that freaking SNI scene that has been lingering around for a month now.

Writing Goal: Get back to the verse novel!

WHAT WORKS FOR ME

Seeing what other people are up to! It can be a little daunting and depressing at times because what other people are doing can be really incredible, but I think it also helps to remind me to work on my own things - and it's always great to see your friends doing well.

WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO

Other than trying to get back on a reasonable sleep schedule, not too much. The Sister found a warehouse sale this past weekend, and we checked it out and may or may not have bought some stuff... Hey, every girl needs one super pretty dress at a deeply discounted price, right?

This weekend was also Loki's birthday!!! I can't believe our puppers is 3 years old! As if in response to turning a year older, he's been acting like such a BIG BABY these past few days - super snuggly and playful. We got him a new bed, a new toy, and a cake. He gets 1 slice every day.

On Monday, I had an "achievement unlocked" moment when I found out that Blackmilk had reposted my leggings + US History books picture to their Instagram and their Facebook!! I squeed and screen-capped it. It was great.

This week is also apparently Geek Fashion Week - a new event put together by the lovely ladies at Geek Fashion Week! They're running a contest with sponsor Her Universe to style 1 HU dress in 3 ways - casual, work, and night. Here's my entry with the HU Loki dress!

Work / Night / Casual

For more geek styling tips from me (har har, me giving styling tips? What?!), come back Friday because this week's 5 Fandom Friday topic is "1 Fandom item styled 5 ways"! I had so much fun doing this with my Marauder's Map dress! :D

NYC Trip Part 2 will be up tomorrow. My Alexander Hamilton love will be evident because I'm covering how I finally visited his house (a trip 4 years in the making)!!

What's up with you?

What's Up Wednesday (60)

What's Up Wednesday is a weekly meme geared toward readers and writers, so we can check in with each other. To join, just check out Jaime Morrow or Erin Funk's blogs for the link widget and sign up!

WHAT I'M READING

Same as last week, but added DUEL WITH THE DEVIL by Paul Collins. It's historical non-fiction, and I saw it at the Hamilton Grange and was intrigued. It's about how Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr worked together as legal counsel in America's first recorded murder trial.

I think you can see why this has caught my attention. I am, surprisingly, reading 0 YA books at the moment, and 2 of the books I'm reading are straight up non-fiction!

WHAT I'M WRITING

Tinkering with some character motivations. Wrote a few snippets of dialogue. Baby steps, right?

Writing Goal: Work on the unfinished SNI scene.

WHAT WORKS FOR ME

I honestly have nothing to say here this week. I think I'm just tired and a little overwhelmed trying to get back into the groove of things. Post-vacation hangover I suppose.

WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO

Nothing too much besides adjusting to the heat in Southern California. We skipped from spring into summer or something because it was in the 90s this past weekend. I basically gorged on Jamba Juice and shaved ice, while one of my friends ran the LA Marathon (because she's a bamf)!

The other thing I've been up to is trying to figure out if I can make it out the NYC again this year to see Hamilton on Broadway. Am I obsessed? Yes, probably. The high has worn off a bit now, but I'm still considering making this my birthday wish because the show is that good.

It also accounts for my major US History reading binge. Yes, I just bought both SHADOW SCALE (the long-awaited follow-up to Seraphina, which I loved! Review linked) and THE WINNER'S CURSE (another omg-I-need-this sequel), but what am I reading? Duel with the Devil - a cold case murder trial from 1800! I also finally bought Ron Chernow's WASHINGTON: A LIFE, for which he won the Pulitzer.

Speaking of nerdy things, I've started recapping my NYC trip in more detail (and pictures). PART 1 is here! PART 2 will be up next week (it's the nerdier part of the 2)! :)

The Sis and I also just started watching THE JINX on HBO, which is addictive in the same way the podcast Serial was. The series finale was this past Sunday, so we're late to the game. But if there's anything the Sis & I are good at, it's binge-watching TV.

Other than that, mostly just trying to stay cool out here & messing with Loki!

What's up with you?

What's Up Wednesday (59)

What's Up Wednesday is a weekly meme geared toward readers and writers, so we can check in with each other. To join, just check out Jaime Morrow or Erin Funk's blogs for the link widget and sign up!

WHAT I'M READING

THIS GORGEOUS BOOK, FINALLY. (A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab)

And though this is a hold-over goal from last month, I finally started my re-read of Ron Chernow's Alexander Hamilton biography. YEP, STILL LOVE IT.

WHAT I'M WRITING

Zero writing. :(

Writing Goal: Write something!!!

WHAT WORKS FOR ME
Music. I generally prefer writing in silence, but every once in a while I'll indulge in soundtracks. Music with words is usually too distracting for me, but sometimes certain songs really capture the mood or relationship between characters!

WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO

Most recent things first.

1) We finally gave stinky Loki a bath. He hated it but was rewarded with a dog-donut afterwards. He also got his early birthday present from me - a new dog bed! I think he loves it.

2) Though it's been out a month, my friends and I hadn't managed to get together to see the Backstreet Boys movie. Yes, they have a documentary-movie. So we gathered this past Saturday to eat pizza and cookies and to relive our fangirl teen years. IT WAS SO GREAT.

Then we watched some BSB music videos (sang along, of course - we will never forget these lyrics) and played with J's new puppy. Isn't she the cutest little lady??

3) Before I left, I snagged this cool Blackmilk Star Wars shooter!

Now, onto the fun stuff: in my 2 week absence from WUW, I've been TRAVELING and recuperating! As I mentioned in my last post, I was headed to New York City at the end of February - possibly the worst time ever to go because IT WAS FREEZING. And I don't even mean wimpy-Californian-me definition of freezing. It was actually VERY COLD. In the cab we took into the city, the Sis and I overheard on the radio that this was "one of the coldest Februaries in New York City on record." *insert crying*

Anyway, I have long promised dear twitter friend Sarah that I'd visit her in NYC, and she has long been trying to lure me there. She finally did it this time when she discovered and informed me of an Off Broadway hip-hop musical about my favoritest of Founding Fathers - Alexander Hamilton! So this trip I got to do 2 things, finally visit and stay with Sarah (the loveliest of hostesses) and do super nerdy US History squee-ing things involving my No. 1 history crush.

I will do a more comprehensive NYC post for Monday since I could write forever about all the cool stuff I saw and about Hamilton - both the man and the musical. So please look out for that! For now, here is a summary!

Of course, the Sis and I hit up a few museums on our trip, including one of our absolute favorites, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The main reason for this visit though was so that the Sis could finally see the famous Leutze painting of Washington Crossing the Delaware. Bad timing has kept the Sister from seeing it for years, but she saw it this time in all of its giant glory.

It was also the return of the Sister's imitations in her finest form. Check them out at her Instagram imitationcat.
2 imitations done 4 years apart: left side is from 2011, right side is from this trip.
Other museums/sites were covered, but for the sake of brevity, I will include them in the actual write-up. The only other big museum I must mention is the Museum of Modern Art because we found out right before we went that Van Gogh's The Starry Night (as in the Starry Night painting) is there! My sister wore her newly acquired matching leggings for the occasion, and for those of you wondering about my fabulous blue coat? Here it is!

Other fun things - shopping! Interactive theater retelling of Macbeth called Sleep No More! Custom lipsticks at Bite Beauty Lip Lab! Meeting up at the glorious Strand Bookstore with new-ish Twitter friend Kristin aka Superspacechick - Booktuber and Geek Girl Blogger extraordinaire!

And the rest of the trip was basically Revolutionary US History nerding out (because that ish is my jam) and rekindling my long-time crush on Alexander Hamilton - because let's face it, he's the finest Founding Father gracing a bill. ;) His adopted home is New York, so there's a lot of his stuff to see in NYC. More than I even knew, which meant so many delightful discoveries!

Fair Warning: From this point forward, please be prepared for much Hamilton squee-ing.

My goal for this trip (other than seeing the musical, which is super sold out and for which I'd bought tickets for back in December) was to finally see Hamilton's house, The Grange. The Sis and I are both cursed with bad timing because both times I'd been in NYC in recent years, the Grange had been closed for relocation & renovation. The last time I was in NYC, it re-opened literally the day after I left. So, seeing this historic home was Number 1 on my list and IT HAPPENED!

Me with Sarah outside the Grange. It's even prettier inside!
After the visit to Hamilton Grange, Sarah dropped the Sis and I off at the subway so we could head downtown to see HAMILTON by Lin-Manuel Miranda (of In the Heights fame) at the Public Theater. She had already seen it earlier in the month and told me "it is the best musical I have ever seen, and I've seen a lot of musicals." Needless to say, I was giddy and the Sister was skeptical but looking forward to it.

Guys, it is like my favorite musical that I've seen (and I've seen a few) and that's despite my built-in love for the subject matter. The Sis was hooked two lines into the opening number. By intermission, I was only capable of tweeting in ALL CAPS.

If you think a multi-racial cast that uses hip-hop and R&B to tell a period piece about Alexander Hamilton and the founding of the US can't possibly make mesh, you will have your mind blown by this musical - because it not only works, it owns all of it. It's fun, smart, catchy, moving, and historically aware! It is, after all, based on the hulking 700-some page biography I listed at the top of this post, and Ron Chernow was the resident historian on the project.

In summary, Lin-Manuel Miranda made my history nerd life by writing this incredible musical. He's brilliant. He didn't perform at our showing but was around afterwards chatting with people, and I basically word-vomited my feels at him in the most unseemly fashion. We also chatted a bit with Javier Muñoz, who played Hamilton in LMM's stead, and he was super friendly and sweet. Not to mention, he was fantastic in the role (seriously, so good), and he got a kick out of my Swagilton tee.

All of the Hamiltons! (And that is a life-sized Aaron Bur statue in the back.)

Good times! Yes, this show was worth braving the freezing weather and flying across the country!

And THAT is what I've been up to! What's up with you?

P.S. See you next week for the NYC trip recap. More pictures! More food! More nerdy tidbits! :)

What's Up Wednesday (58) / Writer Recharge- Update 2

Another double duty post because the holiday messed me up and I completely missed my Writer Recharge update...

What's Up Wednesday is a weekly meme geared toward readers and writers, so we can check in with each other. To join, just check out Jaime Morrow or Erin Funk's blogs for the link widget and sign up!

WHAT I'M READING

Same as last week: The Young Elites.

WHAT I'M WRITING

Nothing this week. So much failing.

Writing Goal: Write something!!

WHAT WORKS FOR ME

Working on other, kind of mindless things, especially when I'm stuck. We were doing a lot of cleaning and re-organizing this weekend, which was kind of helpful for pondering various things.

WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO

First, thank you everyone for your congratulations last week on the Riffle MG Editor position! I hope to see some of you on Riffle sometime. :)

I haven't been up to much else since I caught a cold on Tuesday, and it pretty much made the rest of last week go very slowly and kind of miserably.

But I recovered enough by the weekend to make one of my Writer Recharge goals happen and to enjoy the wonderful weather we've been having. Basically, Spring comes early in California.

We were even able to take Loki out to the park where he could run around to his heart's content. He loved it.

I've also been doing some cleaning, which meant reorganizing my book shelves. I seriously need MORE bookshelves and to maybe give away some books because I have way too many! The cleaning is in preparation for Lunar New Year, which is tomorrow! So HAPPY NEW YEAR! I will be pigging out tonight for New Year's Eve dinner with the family.

-----------

Writer Recharge is meant to be a four-week jump start in the middle of a cold, dreary winter. Set goals, check in once a week (on Mondays), and connect with other recharging writers. It's hosted by the lovely Katy Upperman, Alison Miller, Liz Parker, Elodie Nowodazkij, and Sara Biren.

Here's how I did for Week 2.

WRITE/REVISE
Nothing this week since I was sick. Bleh.

READ/REREAD
Still no Hamilton reread, but finishing up The Young Elites. I also read a bit of poetry.

STRETCH
No vlogging, but getting the hang of my new position with Riffle is stretching my social media & community muscles.

SELF
More sleep goal win - mostly because of my cold and Nyquil, but it has put me back on track to getting to bed earlier. Facial was also a success, and I got some nice new product to add to my face-washing routine.

CONNECT
Didn't happen this week because of sickness again. :(

FUN
I will be packing my bags the next time I update this Recharge! NYC soon, but I am so not ready for the cold!

Other Writer Recharge people, how did you do for Week 2? and WUW peeps, what's up with you?

What's Up Wednesday (58)

(It's still unseasonably warm here, but I couldn't resist this snowman button!)

What's Up Wednesday is a weekly meme geared toward readers and writers, so we can check in with each other. To join, just check out Jaime Morrow or Erin Funk's blogs for the link widget and sign up!

WHAT I'M READING

Marie Lu's THE YOUNG ELITES.

Really enjoying the world-building in this one, and I'm curious to see how Adelina evolves.

WHAT I'M WRITING

World-building for the SNI because it's glitzy and sparkly, and I like that.

Writing Goal: Write a stanza for the verse story.

WHAT WORKS FOR ME

Playing the game of What If? This usually helps with world-building and/or the early stages with the SNI. There are usually a few details that come with the initial idea, and from there, I'll pick the few bits that I think are the most interesting and ask what if?. If this exists in this way, then how would it affect this?

WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO

I have been anticipating the new sitcom FRESH OFF THE BOAT and hoping that it would be good. It's been 20 years since an Asian American family has starred in a broadcast sitcom. Last Wednesday, it had a 2-episode premiere and it was HILARIOUS. I have never laughed so hard at a half hour TV show since maybe Arrested Development. The 2 episodes this week were somehow even funnier. If you've been thinking about watching the show and haven't yet, do so immediately. It is so great!

Thursday

Though I found out about this last minute, I made it to Gayle Forman's signing at my local indie! It was really fun because she brought her friends (and fellow writers) Margaret Stohl and Deanna Kizis. These 3 women were hilarious together and could have gone on all night, but the Q&A was brought to a close by a little boy who asked "When is it over?" before his mom could stop him. It was the perfect end to the night.

And then I picked up a copy of Gayle Forman's new book I WAS HERE and got my old books signed. Yay!

Friday

The Sis and I went to the Hozier show at the Fonda, and it was wonderful (of course)! I've been looking forward to this show since the last time (which was the first time) I saw him in 2014 at the Troubadour, and it did not disappoint. I fangirled about how I fell in insta-love with this voice and music at that first show in my Fandom Friday post about songs from a few weeks ago.

I had a great weekend that involved some retail therapy. I bought a new weekender (that I needed), some shoes I had wanted ages ago but my size wasn't available, and a fabulous blue coat (for NYC coldness). Elodie and Katy asked for pics, but I don't have any yet. Maybe I'll take some this weekend! :D

And lastly, I have some good news that was just finalized this week: I am the new category Editor for Middle Grade at Riffle!

What's Riffle? It's an online community of book lovers, sharing their recommendations, reviews, and TBR lists in a visually appealing way - like a Pinterest for books. It's also a nice alternative to goodreads if you're looking for a new literary playground. (The lists are probably my favorite current feature.)

While I'm more of a YA reader, I do love me some MG too, so I jumped at the opportunity to curate and grow the category at Riffle. Since I am learning and exploring this category as well, I'd love any of your suggestions for MUST-READ MG books. Let me know in the comments or on Riffle!

You can find me getting up to mischief here:

Riffle: Middle Grade Editor
Riffle (personal): Alice (Krispy)
Twitter: @RiffleMG
Tumblr: Riffle Middle Grade

Give me a follow if you are so inclined! :) (But please bear with me this month as I start finding my footing.)

I'm very excited to be working with the folks at Riffle! Here's to fun times ahead!

What's Up Wednesday (57)

(I'm using this un-seasonal button because that's what the weather's been like in SoCal lately...)

What's Up Wednesday is a weekly meme geared toward readers and writers, so we can check in with each other. To join, just check out Jaime Morrow or Erin Funk's blogs for the link widget and sign up!

WHAT I'M READING

I just finished the first volume of the comic book series THE WICKED + THE DIVINE, and I am hooked hooked hooked! My friend who recommended ODY-C to me also recommended this series because he knew about my deep love for mythology. Clever modern-day riffs on myth are basically my catnip.

I especially like this series so far because 1) fun premise 2) myth + pop culture 3) diverse cast 4) sleek and colorful art. Anyone who knows me will not be surprised that my favorite (so far) is Luci. ;)

On the book side of things, I'm reading Marie Lu's THE YOUNG ELITES.

WHAT I'M WRITING

Nothing since the last time I blogged, but I hope to change that around this week with the Writer Recharge Challenge.

Writing Goal: Check out all my goals at my #WriterRecharge post.

WHAT WORKS FOR ME

Pinterest! Sometimes, starring at a story-related board will get me in the right mood or remind me why I love the story I'm working on.

WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO

This past weekend was Free Museum Day in Los Angeles, so the Sister and I plus a couple of friends took advantage and went to visit the Hollywood Costume Museum. No pics allowed, but it was cool to see iconic costumes up close and marvel at the detail.

That museum is on what's known as Museum Mile, so it was right next to the LA Contemporary Museum of Art (LACMA) which I have woefully never been to. Alas, it was too crowded, so I didn't actually get to go inside. But! I did finally get to see the iconic Urban Lights installation up close. We also spent some time in the sculpture garden where the Sis (of course) imitated things.

After lunch, we visited the La Brea Tar Pits and speculated about what might float on top of the tar (a ping pong ball?), and the Sis and I discovered this amazing bear sculpture.

And to end the day on another first for me, I finally rode the LA Metro! That's right. I have lived here all my life and have been on the BART in NorCal, the subway in NYC and Paris, the Taipei rail, and the London Underground, but I have never been on the Metro here. It's true what they say; you drive everywhere in LA.

What's Up Wednesday (56)

What's Up Wednesday is a weekly meme geared toward readers and writers, so we can check in with each other. To join, just check out Jaime Morrow or Erin Funk's blogs for the link widget and sign up!

WHAT I'M READING

Finished VICIOUS and oh my god, I loved it. Great cast + complex characters + complex themes = book love for me. Everyone's the hero of their own story, unless they want to play the villain. ;)

For Christmas, my friend bought me the first 3 volumes of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, and so I've finished Vol. 2 and am in the middle of Vol. 3 at the moment. It's pop culture + mythology, so of course, I love it.

WHAT I'M WRITING

Still playing with the SNI.

Writing Goal: Finish that second SNI scene.

WHAT WORKS FOR ME

I think I've mentioned this before, but reading other people's wonderful work inspires me. Yes, it can also be super depressing, but when something is really good and I love it, it gets my own gears turning.

WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO
It was National Readathon Day this past Saturday. I sadly was not able to read during the time period of the readathon, but I did make time to read that day because I was getting past the halfway point in Vicious.

I finally bought my plane tickets for New York City next month! I can't wait to see Sarah, the city, and my history crush Alexander Hamilton! I will hopefully 1) finally be able to visit his house, The Grange (it was under renovation the last 2 times I was in NYC) and 2) I will be seeing the Lin Manuel musical HAMILTON, based on Ron Chernow's brilliant biography of the man. I'm SO EXCITED.

In fact, if I can swing it, I will probably re-read the 700+ page biography in the next few weeks to prepare.

Speaking of my US History geekery, I have loved History Channel's 3-part mini-series SONS OF LIBERTY. As I said to my friend, it's like the blowing-stuff-up dramatized/ historical-fic version of the birth of the US Revolution (US Revolutionary history & the Critical period are my favorite eras).

I've pushed aside all other TV commitments I usually have on Sunday-Tuesday to watch this thing. I've even dressed for the occasion. (Thanks to my nerdiness & xmas gifts, I have shirts for days.)

1) Join or Die 2) Thomas Paine's Common Sense 3) Washington- Great Britain, not so great.
Also, it has Ben Barnes as an aged-down, dashing Sam Adams. I've had a long-standing crush on him, and not only is he a badass in this (he's Sam Adams, after all), he has a fantastic coat (seriously, the coat!) and is a total babe. Sorry not sorry, I have an ineffable affection for Mr. Barnes.

Oh and to seal the deal, Hans Zimmer wrote this baller theme for the show. I need it in my life.

Now that all 3 parts have aired, I believe you can watch all of them on the History Channel's site. GO DO IT.

(I'm also probably going to go read David McCullough's 1776 now. I've had it for ages...)

What's up with you?

P.S. Sometimes, I feel like people don't understand the extent of my history geekery - but then I make posts like this and then, there's this post as evidence as well.

P.P.S. This 6 YA book giveaway is still going until the end of the month. If you're in the US or Canada, feel free to enter!
