Geekchic OOTD: Meet me in Batuu

It's funny my last outfit post here was a Star Wars-themed one because since then the Star Wars-themed land, Galaxy's Edge: Black Spire Outpost, has opened at Disneyland. AND I HAVE BEEN TO THERE.

Before I get too excited, for those of you not as obsessed with Star Wars as I am, the Galaxy's Edge addition to Disneyland (and Disney World later this summer) is meant to be unlike any other part of the parks. It is an immersive space where you'll find no Star Wars-branded or Disney-branded merch. You're meant to feel like you've ended up in a remote outpost - Black Spire, on the planet of Batuu - in a galaxy far, far away. The cast members speak in-character as denizens of the town. Star Wars characters you may recognize walk around, conducting their own business, though you can, of course, ask them if you can take a picture (get your image scanned) with them. They might not say yes, though.

In any case, I love it immensely because it fulfills a dream of mine - which is to feel like I can visit that world. I was lucky enough to get on 3 separate reservations to go during the first weeks' "soft opening" that ended last week. Of course, I planned 3 separate Star Wars-y outfits for it! I'm sharing them here so they can hopefully inspire you to get into the spirit of dressing up.

I'd previously shared on The Sartorial Geek blog outfit ideas for Light Side Style and Dark Side Chic (check these posts out for more geek style ideas!), but these were the outfits I actually wore to Black Spire Outpost.

Geekchic OOTD: Fly Casual

Is it just me or does each year seem to go by faster and faster? I can't believe we're already a quarter of the way through 2019!

This is an exciting week for 2 reason: I'm going on a short trip, and Star Wars Celebration is happening! Unfortunately, I am NOT going to Celebration, though I came close. I will be jet-setting on a different geeky adventure, but given how much I love Star Wars and the many closet cosplay/ geekbound outfits I've styled in that fandom, I wanted to give you an outfit post.

Maybe this will inspire a closet cosplay of your own, or if you're freaking out over what to wear to Celebration, maybe this is a last minute look that will work for you.

Hope you like this very casual X-Wing pilot-inspired outfit I wore to San Diego Comic Con 2018. It was by far the most comfortable outfit I wore all con, and everything was super easy to find!

Even though orange is not the easiest color to pull off, there is just something about those Rebel Pilot flight suits that is so iconic. Thanks to the current resurgence of jumpsuits and overalls in fashion, it's actually not that hard to find cute ones to wear casually. And that's where the idea for this outfit was born, or shall I say, refined?

Outfit details: Mock-Neck Top (Forever 21) // Overalls (Forever 21) // SUNGLASSES (Ray-Ban) // Fake Fangirl pin (Utinni Bikini) // Sandals (Miista)

At Comic Con 2016, my friends did a version of this Rebel Pilot geekbound with orange dresses and white tops. So the general idea of this pilot-bound outfit had been in my head since then.

While at the mall, I saw these orange overalls and it popped into my head that I could do an updated version of the pilot outfit that was slightly closer to the flight suits. Plus, the shade of orange on these overalls was way more forgiving for regular wear. I found a white mock-neck top to wear underneath that would be a call-back to the white flak vests the Rebel pilots wear over their orange flight suits.

The Sister re-used the white crop top she used in 2016 and put it over an orange jumpsuit she already had. We both topped our outfits off with Rebel Starbirds. I used the one we made previously out of the craft foam, and she used an enamel pin from Utinni Bikini.

My accessories were the finishing touches to tie it all together. Besides the Rebel Starbird, I included Utinni Bikini's brilliant "Fake Fangirl" enamel pin; it's written in Aurebesh, the written language seen in Star Wars. The kangaroo pocket in the front of my overalls were the perfect place to hide my co-pilot BB-8. It's sunny in San Diego, so when it came to choosing sunglasses, I went with aviators to tie into the whole pilot theme.

So there it is! My "Casual Friday" Rebel pilot outfit. Just remember for a simple geekbound like this, think in color blocks and themes. Accessories can also really pull the look together.

If you're headed to Star Wars Celebration, have so much fun. I'm so excited for all the news that's very likely going to be dropped this week! May the Force be with you!

Celebrating Galentine's Day

I'm slowly getting back into blogging, and the celebration of Galentine's Day seemed like a good time to start posting again.

For any of you who have spent even a little bit of time here, you'll know that I am about my sisters - the one by blood and the others by the bonds of friendship and geekery. As such, I always love a good girl power experience or product, and I'm also lucky enough to know a bunch of badass women creators. So hopefully, you'll find something for you and your squad on this list or at the very least, some cool AF boss babes to support this Galentine's Day.

1) Chickens are Bitches

We loved the friendship between Pek Lin and Rachel in the romantic dramedy Crazy Rich Asians, and we particularly loved the line about playing chicken. Our ConSquad resident graphic designer, Gennia, indulged all of us by designing two delightful "Bok Bok Bitch" shirts for the entire crew.

Want your own? Check out the PoeSquadron Teepublic page.

2) Get Strong with you Girl Gang

So I am terrible at staying on top of my fitness game, but it helps so much to go with friends. You can keep each other motivated to at least show up! Last year, I signed up for some trial classes with the Sister, and our friend Sherry. Because of that, we've hiked together, nearly died together in a particularly grueling Pop Physique class, and cried over soreness after kick-boxing.

In a similar vein, I just finished Geek Girl Strong's 1Up Wellness Challenge, which was a week of exercise, self-care, and healthy eating prompts led by Robyn. I found Robyn online through Jordandené, and she is honestly one of the most badass women I know of. She is constantly encouraging and open with her experiences, and seeing her workout videos in my feed is inspiring

The 1Up challenge was great because it came with a dose of community (remember what I said about it being easier to keep stuff up with friends?), and it was done online. So even though Robyn is literally across the country from me, I could participate! I highly recommend joining Geek Girl Strong challenges when they come around, and if you're looking for a health coach, Robyn offers in-person and online coaching packages!

3) Girl Power but make it Fashion

I know I already talked about dressing your girl gang, but I do love a good outfit, especially if it can be geeky. Plus, I'd be remiss to not share some of the rad things boss babes are doing at the intersection of style and fandom.

Sherry in a Jordandene shirt, me in an Elhofferdesign sweater, and Cat in a Spider-Man shirt.
  • Skylar Yoo - feminist art and apparel, featuring graphic tees with bold hand-lettering and 20% of their profits go to 2 charities benefiting girls.
  • Little Petal - convertible, hand-made dresses with pockets! Very body positive, very feminist.
  • Bombsheller - beautiful, vibrant printed leggings in a huge range of sizes, printed on demand & ethically sourced.
  • The Colorful Geek - one of the very first geek girl-owned tee-shops I went to because of the fun designs and variety of fandoms!
  • ElhofferDesign- body positive and chic AF. Katie is constantly making the clothes of my subtle geek fashion dreams.
  • Logan Arch - fun merch combining 90s nostalgia with modern fandom. Their 13th Doctor Collection is seriously for the Time Lady in all of us.

Obviously, I have to mention Jordandené since a big chunk of my everyday geekwear is from there, and there are so many shirts with great, empowering quotes - like Geek Girl Power, Nevertheless She Persisted, and Clever Girl. Not to mention, the 2 designs that debuted this month say "Stay Badass" and "Higher. Further. Faster." - this latter one being a reference to highly anticipated Captain Marvel and it's a limited Shirt of the Month.

Plus, they just brought back sweatshirts in different styles and colors, and they added zip-up hoodies! I just got a cropped Loki hoodie, and I can confirm they are as soft as you remember (if you own one of the old sweatshirts). Full disclosure, I am currently a brand ambassador for Jordandené, but that doesn't affect my opinion of the clothes and I've been a fan long before I started getting items for review. Anyway, if you use my code, akangaru, you can get 15% off a $20 minimum purchase, and you help me earn my next review piece!

4) Book Club

From superheroes to hopeless romantics to scientists to artists to women on a mission, the stories of complex female characters and real life women/girls are for everyone. Here are just a few suggestions. I've not read all of these, but if I haven't read it, rest assured it's on my TBR.

These are just a few things to share with your besties this Galentine's Day, besides a fun night out or a nice meal. But of course, the most important part of this day is to celebrate your friends and the amazing people they are. Sisters before Misters and all of that!

Q4U: How do you celebrate Galentine's Day? How do you celebrate your friends?

Guest Post: Why One Style Won’t Fit All

Can you believe we're already almost halfway through the year? I've got a few blog post ideas in the works, so hopefully things will be a little more active here soon. Until then, I'm pleased to have this guest post from Ashley Lipman, who runs a blogger network called The Blog Frog!

Since A Nudge has evolved to cover topics outside writing/reading to include geek fashion, I thought it'd be appropriate to have Ashley write a little bit about personal style. So without further ado, here's Ashley on style.

Why One Style Won’t Fit All

It goes without saying that all people are different. Even people who wear the same size clothing wear them differently. This has been a challenge for fashion designers for generations. While they provide their styles with various options, it's up to the wearer to select the right style and size for them. Herein lies the problem.

How do you know if something doesn’t fit?

This sounds like a silly question, but it is a very real issue. People often go for style and comfort without stopping to see if the clothing fits them properly. The fact that you can put it on doesn’t mean you should.

The very first thing you must accept is that the size printed on the tag means nothing. Designers and brands are often sized differently. If you get hung up on the size on the label, you will miss out on some fantastic looks. Use the size printed simply as a starting point and nothing more.

The trick is using fashion to accent your best features and to camouflage your problem areas. Fashion is the tool you use. You do not conform to fashion; it works for you.

Below are some easy tips to help you determine if your clothing fits you well:

  • You cannot hug someone with your jacket on.
  • Your shirt gaps open between the buttons.
  • The waistband of your pants or skirt is so tight that you cannot slip your fingers behind it.
  • Your shorts (or underwear) are continually riding up.
    • There is never a time where your clothing should be overlapped with your flesh.
  • When you sit down, your skirt doesn’t cover your undies.
    • If your skirt doesn’t cover your panties when you sit down, you need a larger size.
  • Bra fit
    • Your breast should not bulge over the cups of your bra or dig into your shoulders.

The World of T-Shirts

Everyone loves tee shirts. People collect them and wear them for years. They are great for branding and advertising. If you have a corporate event, family reunion, or charity happening, you should consider personalized shirts for your event.

Tee shirts are the one item of clothing you can wear in a size or two larger than you actually wear. People wear them casually and as cover-ups over swimwear, dancewear, and with just about anything. Even so, if your tee shirt will not stay tucked in it is too small.

In conclusion, you can wear fashions that are current and stylish. But you must be honest with yourself. Do not try to impress anyone with the size or cut of the latest trend. Instead, commit yourself to finding clothes that are fashionable and fit you well. If you do, you will always be stunning and beautiful. You are worth the effort.

Geekchic OOTD: Ready to Ragnarok

November is upon us, and with it, Ragnarok! Of course, I don't mean the Norse mythological End of Days/ Twilight of the Gods. I'm talking about the 3rd THOR movie, and by far, the most colorful and funniest of them all.

By now, you should know I'm a Loki stan, and he's been a constant fashion inspiration for the past few years (but will someone please cut his hair?). I was punk rock Loki for Comic Con this year, and I think it's true that tricksters have the most fun.

A post shared by alice (@akangaru) on

So with a new Thor movie out and the return of my favorite mischief maker to the silver screen, I had to do an outfit post. I ended up doing 3 outfits - 2 casual ones here and a fancier one over at Girl on the Roam. Plus, the Geeky Fashion Blogger Alliance fittingly made this month's style challenge all about Thor. Without further ado...

OOTD No. 1: Trouble Maker

I wanted to do something a little more toned down than what I did for punk rock Loki, so I went with something more 90s grunge for every day wear.

Outfit details: TANKS (Cotton On) // SHIRT-DRESS (Target) // SHORTS (Target) // SHOES (Nike- similar) // BRACELET (World Market - similar) // NECKLACE-collar (Sparkling Rampage) // NECKLACE-scepter (Hot Topic - similar) // SUNGLASSES (Ray-Ban) // LIP COLOR (Colourpop in 'Beeper')

OOTD No. 2: Thunderer

My Thor outfit isn't really decade-inspired, but I wanted to do something similarly casual. This outfit uses, I think, the first Thor shirt I ever bought. It's from years ago, but I still wear it!

Outfit details: TANK (Wetseal) // VEST (Target) // JEANS (Uniqlo) // SHOES (E8 by Miista) // BRACELETS (Forever 21 - similar) // LIP COLOR (Bite Beauty in 'Violet' - similar)

I'd (very last minute) fabric-painted the Ragnarok patch and safety pinned it to the moto vest for Comic Con for the punk Loki costume. So I just re-used it here.

And bonus:

What I wore to see Thor Ragnarok: check out the outfit details at Girl on the Roam.

Geekchic OOTD: Wonder Woman

The Wonder Woman movie opens this Friday, and I am so scared and excited for it. Scared because frankly, I've been burned by the DC movies too many times to trust them, but excited because it's Wonder Woman! She's arguably the most famous female superhero, and she's finally getting her own movie and one directed by a woman, too. These milestones in pop culture are something to cheer about (though it's taken shamefully long to get here)!

To celebrate the release, here's a throwback Thursday OOTD post of the casual/closet cosplay Wonder Woman I wore to Comic Con two years ago.

I zip-lined across the Gotham skyline in this outfit. Luckily, I brought a pair of shorts to change into before zipping.
The skirt is what makes it. It was a lucky find at Forever 21; I literally saw it from outside the store as I was walking by. It was the inspiration for the geekbound in the first place. Once I had the skirt, I just bought a red shirt and accessorized appropriately.

The bangles, belt, headband, and ring were all from Forever 21, too, but other than the bangles, everything else I'd already had. The necklace was another lucky find at Papaya (an F21-like store). The Sister did her own geekbound take on Aquaman and DIYed a sea-themed headband for it.

I updated the look a little for Halloween - different headband and belt, red sandals, and I found one of my mom's old belts that conveniently looked like rope for my lasso! For Nerdvember, I put together a simpler (and warmer) geekbounding look. I'll probably wear something similar to see the movie!

I have never hoped so hard for any movie to be good, and the positive reviews coming out now are letting me rest a little easier. I'm seeing it tonight! Keep your fingers crossed that I come back with a glowing review!!

In any case, if you're thinking about seeing it, I encourage you to do it sooner rather than later. As they say, money is the language Hollywood understands best, and it's time the myth that female-led movies (superhero or otherwise) don't sell is dispelled.

Q4U: Are you excited for Wonder Woman?

**EDIT: Saw the movie, and oh my goodness, Diana is everything!! Mini-spoiler-free review taken from my Instagram post today: While the movie had its flaws (the 3rd act was not my fave & probably the weakest part of the film, & the movie could've been tighter in parts), everything else was what I hoped it would be. Gal Gadot's Diana is idealistic & compassionate, vulnerable & strong, & truly just someone out to do good. And her chemistry with Chris Pine's Steve Trevor is 💯. He lets her do her thing without trying to diminish her & he in turn is not diminished by her superheroics.

Geekchic OOTD: Weekend Vibes

Friends, how is August already over? We are coming up on the Labor Day weekend here in the U.S., one of our last long weekends before the winter holidays and sort of the last hurrah of summer.

(Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with Lootcrate and have not subscribed to their boxes, but I've seen them around, and it looks like fun stuff!)

Recently, I was inspired by Loot Crate to blog about a favorite geeky look because they so often have cool apparel in their boxes. Loot Crate creates monthly subscription boxes that feature geeky collectibles (like shirts!) from current fandoms, and they're usually themed, which makes things extra fun.

Since we are headed into the final days of summer (and school has already begun for many) and summer is my favorite season, I thought I'd give it a nice send-off by talking about my most casual but also most tried and true warm-weather look - shorts and a geeky tank. This is seriously my uniform for the summer and a lot of the year since I'm in California.

These outfits are the epitome of my weekend vibes.

1) Witchy Chic

As much as I love my Ravenclaw gear and Marauder's Map everything, sometimes I like my fandom pride to be a little more subtle. That's why I love this Deathy Hallows muscle tank because unless you're a Harry Potter fan, it's not as immediately obvious what it is. I paired this with plain, light denim shorts but played up the magic and whimsy with my accessories (star shoes, quote bracelets, flower crown).

I took a little bit of inspiration from festival fashion and the stylish summer goths and witch girls out there. There's something to be said about wearing black - even when it's hot out - because it just looks so damn cool.

Outfit details: SHIRT (Hot Topic) // SHORTS (Target) // SHOES (Eeight) // BRACELETS (Show Pony Until the Very End cuff via Owlcrate / CynicalRedhead Isadora Duncan cuff) // FLOWER CROWN (Forever 21 - similar) // LIP COLOR (Colourpop in 'Beeper')

2) Back to Basics

Labor Day weekend in the U.S. is usually marked by BBQs, beach days, and the last of the outdoor gatherings as summer winds down. So I thought I'd go a little more simple with my second outfit, which honestly, would've been great for the 4th of July too. This Team Cap tank is your basic "graphic tee" type design. I matched it with patterned shorts and fun sunglasses but made sure both pulled from colors on the tank (blue and red, respectively) to keep it all streamlined. To top it all off, I had to have a classic red lip.

Outfit details: SHIRT (Target) // SHORTS (Target x Marimekko n/a - similar) // SANDALS (1st pair - similar, 2nd pair - Miista) // BRACELETS (Show Pony Until the Very End cuff / Sparkling Rampage ACOMAF cuff) // SUNGLASSES (Hot Topic) // LIP COLOR (Colourpop in 'Creeper')

I hope this inspires you to dress up those graphic tees and tanks that you have in your closets! And if you're looking for an easy way to up your geek style game, check out Lootcrate! They have tons of different monthly subscription boxes filled with pop culture goodness, including ones that focus on apparel if that's what you want. :)

Wave that geek flag high! Happy weekend, friends!

Unique, Geeky Goods from Calamityware

This post has been long in coming, but I promise this is something good.

As you know, I'm a sucker for geeky knickknacks and am always on the look-out for things that are fun and unique. I also love things that are subtle, that prompt a second look.

So when I saw Megan (the Nerdy Girlie) instagram her Things Could be Worse Calamityware mug, I was smitten! I love that it looks like classic porcelain, but if you take a good look at the design, you can spot dinosaurs, monsters, UFOs, and more!

You can imagine how excited I was when Calamityware contacted me and asked if I was interested in posting about their products. Spoiler, I said yes!

(Disclaimer: Calamityware sent me some items in exchange for a blog post about them.)

Earlier this summer, they sent me 2 things. The first is part of the product line that gave Calamityware their start: a porcelain plate featuring a monstrous surprise in its design.

This is Calamityware Plate 7: Tentacles. I love how from afar it looks like regular fine china, but up close, it is filled with awesome little details.

I mean look at those tentacles, that man running away across the bridge, the chill black cat. The border pattern is just gorgeous. And yes, these are actual dinner plates. You can eat off of them or display them.

Also, you may have noticed this is Plate 7, and that's because it's part of an entire series of plates featuring different calamities - pirates, volcanoes, giant robots, and plenty more. In fact, one of their newest plate designs features a plague of frogs. Ribbit.

The other item Calamityware sent me was something you might recall seeing if you follow me on Instagram. It's the BADbandana 3: Spirited Bones!

A photo posted by alice (@akangaru) on

The Sister instantly picked out this dancing skeleton print when I showed her the different styles of BADbandanas that Calamityware offers, and I have to say these bones are even more delightful in person and up close. Again, the design is so detailed and whimsical. I love that there are animal and monster skeletons enjoying the festivities too! It makes any outfit just a little more awesome.

The squares are large, and while the fabric is a little rough when it's brand new, a few washes softens it up nicely. The bandanas also come in packs of 3! So you can get 3 of the same design or a mixed design pack. And 3 bandanas means everyone in the family can have one to rock.

So, if you liked any of these items, check out Calamityware for more products with quirky, unique art. I think they even have a sea monster shower curtain on the way! Basically, when the time comes for me to shop for a nice set of dinner plates, I know where to look for ones with personality.

Hope you enjoyed this little feature on a small business putting silly and adorable art into the world!

Q4U: What do you think of these designs? Would you buy a set of calamitous dinner plates?

Truly Geekchic: Hero Within & Elhoffer Design

Took an unintended hiatus from blogging because the summer months always get really busy for me, but I hope to be back somewhat more regularly - at least until Comic Con hits.

And since it is the season of the biggest geek convention around, it's the perfect time to talk about 2 amazing geek fashion brands. One of them just launched last week, and the other has been making noise around the web since last year. What they have in common is their subtle yet wonderfully geeky and chic designs. I'm so excited to feature them and their latest collections.

HERO WITHIN

If you've been online searching for SDCC tips, you've likely stumbled upon Tony Kim a.k.a. Crazy4ComicCon and his helpful posts. His newest venture that just launched last week is the menswear brand HERO WITHIN, which offers "heroic style for everyday geeks."

From the press release: Whether it's Superman, Batman or your favorite DC Comics(TM) hero, we uniquely integrate iconic symbols into the construction of each garment, creating a subtle yet bold statement. This innovative approach will redefine how men express fandom.

Here is what Tony has to say about Hero Within:

“As fanboys, we’ve grown up settling for limited and boring nerd style- graphic tees and hoodies. While our passion hasn’t changed, our fashion needs have. HERO WITHIN apparel was designed to be sophisticated while shamelessly embracing our geeky side. We hope everyday you can celebrate your hero within.”

Full disclaimer, I was at the meeting where Hero Within was first discussed, and I loved not only the idea of a menswear collection that wasn't based on the ubiquitous graphic tee but also the message behind it - that geekery can be sophisticated and all of us can be heroes. In fact, Hero Within is dedicated to supporting and inspiring local foster youth through comic books. It's amazing to see that idea I heard about as a realized menswear collection now, officially licensed by DC Comics(TM) too!

I'm so excited to see where Tony takes this and hope to be able to support this endeavor more in the future.

HeroWithinStore.com will be open for Pre-Orders from July 6th to July 31st 2016 (or until capacity is reached). The store will reopen at a future date. If you're headed to San Diego Comic Con, you'll be able to see the entire collection in person. Check the website for location and details.

Keep up with Hero Within on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter: @HeroWithinInc.

ELHOFFER DESIGN

Unlike with Tony, I don't know Catherine Elhoffer, but I am familiar with her creative and super stylish geek designs. I think her Captain Phasma-inspired dress was the first one to really make me pay attention, and I only later discovered that a number of my favorite We Love Fine styles were designed by her as well.

Any of you who follow me on Instagram know that I don't shy away from wearing my fandoms loud and proud in bright colors and bold prints, but I also love "inspired by" designs. It's so cool when clever color-blocking or thoughtful silhouettes are enough to evoke a character or fandom. Catherine's Elhoffer Design has this type of fashion locked down. Just look at these Star Wars dresses!

So given how much I love Catherine's designs and how much I adore a certain musical, you can imagine how excited I was to hear Elhoffer Design's latest collection would be Hamilton-inspired!!

Affectionately called the "Hamilgown" collection, it includes a mix of full dresses and tunic tops that are faux 18th century style coats.

From the press release: Expanding her geek fashion detailing, these pieces are more elaborate than any of her previous geek-inspired works with fabric-covered and metal buttons, cuffed sleeves, pocket flaps above side-seam pockets, epaulettes, lace detailing, and more. While some of the dresses may look like coats, it’s an optical illusion due to topstitching and asymmetrical patterning. The entire collection was handmade by Catherine at Elhoffer Design as a love letter to the musical that has changed the world.

PODCAST!
To hear more about both of these fashion brands in their own word, listen to Tony's latest podcast with Catherine Elhoffer - in which they discuss their fashion journeys.

Looking forward to whatever geeky looks these guys come up with next!

Q4U: What do you guys think of these collections? Do you want more subtle geek clothing?
