I agree about the first book seeming WAY too short. I always wonder about historical novels intended for the over-12 crowd being under a minimum of 300 pages. I'd expect a novel spanning that many years to be at least 500 pages long.<br /><br />One of my favorite books from the Japanese history course I took was Richard Kim's Lost Names, about his family's experience during the Japanese occupation of Korea in the Thirties and Forties.
